Mariners look for answers at Safeco Field

We’re now five innings in and the Mariners still trail by that same 1-0 score. Erasmo Ramirez has been much more effective than in his first two outings, holding the A’s to a pair of hits so far — one of them the Seth Smith solo homer.
The Mariners have scattered six hits, but can’t come up with a big one. I’ve seen more grounders to the third baseman tonight than I can remember in quite a while. The M’s had two on with one out in the fourth inning, but Miguel Olivo grounded into a 5-4-3 double-play.

If NBA and NHL teams come to Seattle, can this market support six pro franchises and college sports?

7:45 p.m.: Two innings in and the Mariners trail 1-0 after Seth Smith pounded the first pitch he saw from Erasmo Ramirez well beyond the center field wall in the second inning. Ramirez struck out the side in the opening frame with some great late movement on his fastball but didn’t get enough of that with Smith at the plate.
The Mariners have three singles thus far. They put two on with two out in the first inning when Franklin Gutierrez singled and then Jess Montero lined a single to center that Coco Crisp failed to corral on-the-fly. But Justin Smoak grounded out to end the threat.
7:03 p.m.: Not going to beat the point to death (well, any more than usual) but the Mariners simply have to start scoring at Safeco Field. Especially against these Oakland Athletics, who also have trouble scoring, but do know a thing or two about preventing runs.
Erasmo Ramirez has to deliver more for Seattle than he has in his first two career starts. His five innings and four innings his first two times out were not of a high enough quality or length.
