For the third time, Felix Hernandez is an American League All-Star.
Hernandez was named to the team this morning by AL manager Ron Washington, the only Mariner player selected. The Mariners had a couple of other longshot pitching candidates — relievers Tom Wilhelmsen and Charlie Furbush — but Washington opted for the 2010 Cy Young Award winner.
Hernandez wrapped up the choice in his last three starts by going 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 23 innings.
Hernandez was an All-Star in 2009 in St. Louis, pitching a scoreless inning. He also made the team last year but wasn’t part of the game because he had started the previous Sunday. Brandon League and Michael Pineda participated for the M’s last year in Phoenix. The only season he didn’t make the team in the last four years was his Cy Young season.
Hernandez is 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA, leading the AL with 114 strikeouts in 110 2/3 innings.
The All-Star Game will take place July 10 in Kansas City.
