Mariners hang on for 2-1 win despite striking out 15 more times

You’ve got to give this one to the Seattle pitching staff. For a second straight game, the Mariners opened the scoring in the first inning and then went AWOL on offense.
So, it was up to starter Jason Vargas and the bullpen to hang on for a 2-1 win.
Both Seattle runs came on a two-out, two-run single to left by Michael Saunders in the first inning.

The Tampa Bay run was unearned in the seventh when Ichiro ill-advisedly threw a ball away at third base trying to nab a runner who was going to be safe in any event.
The error scored the run and ended a Seattle errorless streak at 12 games.
But the bullpen came on and held the fort. Shawn Kelley got two outs and Oliver Perez fanned Carlos Pena with the tying run on third to end the inning.
Perez got one more out in the eighth, then Brandon League earned two more before Tom Wilhelmsen closed it out in the ninth.
The Mariners struck out 15 times tonight. When’s the last time they won a nine-inning game while doing that? They had five consecutive strikeouts twice during the game.
Seattle has struck out 32 times in two games here so far. But they’re at .500 for the series and for now, they’ll take it.
