Brendan Ryan sits for the fourth straight game. He was out catching footballs a few minutes ago with the relievers, who run pass patterns every day as part of their fitness routine. But when the lineup was posted, he wasn’t on it. Munenori Kawasaki is 5-for-12 (.417) with a .462 on-base percentage in the previous three games as Ryan’s replacement.
Baltimore starter Steve Johnson is making his first major-league start. He’s the son of former Orioles pitcher Dave Johnson , a broadcaster on MASN, the Orioles flagship. How about this? Dave Johnson got his first major-league win on Aug. 8, 1989 — 23 years ago today. His son has one major-league appearance in relief, but no wins. Steve was called up after last night’s game and replaced scheduled starter Tommy Hunter, who was scratched because he had to warm up during the 14-inning marathon.
For the Mariners, Michael Saunders will be trying to bounce back from yesterday’s 0-for-7, with four strikeouts.
