Felix Hernandez had a one-run lead in the eighth, but the top of the Angels order came up and did him in. Four runs later, the Angels were on their way to handing Hernandez and the Mariners a 5-2 loss.
Hernandez had not been beaten since the San Diego Padres tripped him up back on June 12.
That’s also the second straight loss at home for Seattle, something that hasn’t happened since July 3 and 4, when the Orioles beat them. But when you manage only four hits the way the Mariners did through seven innings against a pitcher like Ervin Santana — who has struggled all year — you’re asking for trouble. The M’s have relied on Hernandez a little too much of late while not giving him enough run support.
Today, they paid for it late.
