Mariners swept by Oakland, finish homestand 3-6

Winning in baseball is pretty tough to do when you don’t score many runs. The Mariners scored a couple today, but had only four all series and while that might be enough to beat the Twins or Indians, it’s not going to get it done against a good team very often.
The Oakland Athletics, like the Mariners, know how to pitch. And they seem to have put together just enough offense in the second half of this season to get it done when it matters.
Today, the A’s hit two home runs and that was enough for a 4-2 win over the M’s to complete a three-game sweep. Seattle finishes the homestand at 3-6, going 2-1 versus a Red Sox team that has dropped 11 of 12 overall, while finishing 1-5 against the Angels and the A’s.
Seattle has gone 19 games in a row in which all of its scoring has been limited to an inning or two. The Mariners are 9-10 over that stretch — 8-2 against the reeling Red Sox, Twins and Indians and 1-8 versus the contending Angels, A’s and White Sox.
In other words, the M’s might go into Toronto this week and manage to win a series against a struggling Blue Jays team scoring only once or twice per contest. But unless this offense starts scoring more often, the Mariners will have trouble keeping up with the contending squads on the schedule the rest of the season after that.
