Pretty good chance you’ll see Felix Hernandez get another award tonight

Tonight is the night I get to go down on the field and hand out the local Baseball Writers Association of America awards to three Mariners players. I can’t tell you in advance who the winners will be for Best Player, Best Pitcher and Unsug Hero.
But let’s just say it was unanimous in the pitcher category and that I think Felix Hernandez is going to be at the ballpark tonight.
So, if you want a chance to thank Hernandez for another season in which he’s contending for a Cy Young Award, tonight just might be the night to do it.

By the way, feel free to write in here with your take on who should win the three awards. Remember, the Unsung Hero thing is not meant for a player at a glamor position — like closer Tom Wilhelmsen. It’s usually more for a guy whose contributions tend to fly under the mainstream radar.
Last year, it went to Brendan Ryan because of his defensive wizardry in spite of his batting numbers.
Two years ago, it went to Jason Vargas.
So, think of a guy in a less-spotlight, or even a part-time role, who does stuff that truly helped the team win some games.
