Mariners try to win season series against defending AL champion Rangers

Well, looks like we’ve got a ballgame again all of a sudden, Ryan Dempster was rolling along until the seventh inning, when Eric Thames and Brendan Ryan connected for solo homers off him.
Robbie Ross came on to pitch after Ryan’s homer — his third all season — and got the final out of the seventh.
Now, it’s a 3-2 game heading to the eighth and some of those missed chances by the Rangers earlier are looming a bit large. The biggest was in the fifth inning, when they had runners at the corners with none out and failed to score.

3:03 p.m.: Midway through the sixth, the Rangers are holding a 3-0 lead over Jason Vargas and the Mariners. All of the runs came in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Mike Napoli, then a two-run blast to left field by Geovany Soto.
The Rangers nearly blew it wide open an inning later, putting runners at the forners with none out. But Adrian Beltre popped out foul to the catcher and Nelson Cruz grounded into a double play.
Seattle nearly tied it off Ryan Dempster in the fifth inning, but Franklin Gutierrez just got under a pitch with two out and runers at the corners and wound up flying out just in front of the left field warning track.
12:51 p.m.: Regardless of whether the Mariners end their season with 75 wins, or 76, or 74, you know they’d love to capture today’s game and take the season series against the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are the two-time defending American League champions and the Mariners could use a season series win like this to help promote their rebuilding plan this coming off season.
The last time the M’s won a season series over Texas came when they went 11-8 against the Rangers back in 2007.
That’s also the last time the Mariners swept a series of any kind versus the Rangers, taking three in a row over them from Sept. 28-30 of 2007 — capping an 87-win campaign.
The M’s have won four of their last five over Texas in the past week, including the first two games of the series that concludes today with Jason Vargas taking the mound against Ryan Dempster.
