Mariners name Tom Allison director of professional scouting

We’re watching the Angels take batting practice here today ahead of tonight’s crucial start for Felix Hernandez. David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays has turned his game up a notch in recent weeks and he and Justin Verlander are now on the verge of pulling away from Hernandez in the Cy Young Award race.
Hernandez needs to dazzle tonight. If not, he will probably go on to lose the award. You can’t go winless in September and capture a Cy Young. It’s never happened and won’t this year.
In other news, the Mariners have finally filled a director of professional scoting position that’s been vacant for a while now by naming Tom Allison to the post.
Allison, 45, has 18 years of scouting experience behind him, most recently as the Midwest Regional crosschecker for the Boston Red Sox the past two seasons. He was director of scouting for the Arizona Diamondbacks for four years prior to that in some excellent draft years for that club.
“We are excited about the addition of Tom Allison to our organization as Director of Pro Scouting,” states a release quoting Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik, who worked with Allison for several years with the Milwaukee Brewers. “He brings a level of experience with his background as a crosschecker, scouting director, minor league player and as a front office executive. He is a well-rounded individual and his contributions will be an asset to the Seattle Mariners.”
The Mariners haven’t had a director of pro scouting since firing Carmen Fusco two years ago, shortly after the Josh Lueke controversy. The team has never given a specific reason for why Fusco was let go.
