12:46 p.m.: Justin Smoak nearly homered again from the left side, but had to settle for a deep double to the left-center gap off Matt Cain to make it a 3-1 lead for the Mariners midway through the third. With two out, Casper Wells doubled down the left field line and then Smoak took Cain the opposite way. Any wind in the ballpark, that ball would have been out. As it is, the sprinting outfielders couldn’t get deep enough to catch it.
12:42 p.m.: Jon Garland tossed a scoreless first inning, giving up a hit and a walk today in his Cactus League debut. We’re having some internet issues at Scottsdale Stadium today, so the updates will be a bit less frequent. For Garland, it was his first game action since midway through 2011 as he recovers from labrum surgery on his right shoulder.
A bit jittery, as to be expected, but he got through the frame with no damage done.
The Mariners lead the San Francisco Giants 2-1, scoring a pair in the second inning off Matt Cain, including one run on a solo homer to right field by Nick Franklin. Blake Beavan came on to work the second inning for Seattle and allowed a run after a leadoff single to left by Brandon Belt, who stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a sac fly to left.
Beavan got a pair of groundball outs that inning as he continues to work on generating a more downward plane with his pitches.
