Another new lineup for Mariners as Jesus Montero, Brendan Ryan, Kendrys Morales get a rest

There was going to be a new lineup today with backup catcher Kelly Shoppach becoming the final Mariners position player to get into a game, as Jesus Montero gets a deserved day off after three straight nights behind the plate.

This move makes sense as well since the Mariners will have veteran Shoppach catch Brandon Maurer today in his much-anticipated big league debut straight out of Class AA. Raul Ibanez moves in as the DH today, with Kendrys Morales getting a day off after scuffling the first few games of this series.

It’s been interesting to watch manager Eric Wedge find playing time for all of his players with these lineups so far. With a right-hander on the mound for the A’s in A.J. Griffin, Ibanez will gets his cuts in. Brendan Ryan also gets a rest today, with Robert Andino taking over at shortstop for the first time. Remember, Andino was a natural shortstop coming up. Ryan is 2-for-7 (.286) after playing in all three games and the Mariners would like to see that hitting trend continue, so he’s getting a rest to stay fresh.
