Here are tonight’s lineups as the Mariners attempt to bounce back from last night’s 16-9 debacle, and avoid the indignity of losing a series to the Astros. I agree with what Buster Olney said today on ESPN.com: That games against the Astros carry a definite tension because teams know they are expected to win them. And that goes extra for the Mariners tonight with the series on the line.
Michael Morse gets his first night off of the season, meaning Eric Wedge has written his 10th different lineup in 10 games. Raul Ibanez gets the start in left. Significantly, Franklin Gutierrez is starting for the fourth consecutive game, a positive sign considering his health history and the way he’s been babied all spring. Gutierrez is 0-for-10 in his previous three starts, however.
The Mariners made it official this afternoon, calling up lefty Bobby LaFromboise from Tacoma while optioning Lucas Luetge to the Triple-A team. It’s the first major-league stint for LaFromboise, who hadn’t given up a run in two appearances with the Rainiers. Luetge had a 8.31 ERA in four appearances. The Mariners needed fresh arms after Brandon Maurer lasted just two-thirds of an inning last night.
And in case you missed it earlier, Casper Wells was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays.
