No Franklin Gutierrez in the lineup as Mariners prepare to face Yu Darvish

Screen Shot 2013-04-19 at 1.46.40 PMFranklin Gutierrez didn’t play yesterday in the series finale win over the Detroit Tigers. And he is out of the lineup a second straight game today as the Mariners prepare to take on ace right-hander Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers.

This can mean one of several things.

The Mariners might prefer a lefty-on-righty matchup and want to go with the “hot hand” of Endy Chavez and his left-handed bat in center and the leadoff spot.

They might want to give Gutierrez an extra day of rest after that long, 14-inning affair two nights ago. So, this would be a preventative step.

Or, No. 3, Gutierrez is hurting again and they don’t want to risk injuring him further.

I suppose we also look to go with No. 4: all of the above.

But for whatever the reason, the team’s starting center fielder when camp broke is not in the lineup as the Mariners prepare for a tough series in Texas against the best Rangers pitcher.
