Franklin Gutierrez to disabled list, Carlos Peguero called up by Mariners
This one doesn’t come as a surprise after last night. The Mariners have just placed center fielder Franklin Gutierrez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and recalled outfielder Carlos Peguero from Class AAA.
That means, the Mariners had better pray nothing happens to Endy Chavez the next few days until Michael Saunders is ready to come off the DL. Saunders is eligible for that on Friday, but might need a few extra days.
Gutierrez went down with the hamstring injury in the fourth inning of last night’s game, but honestly, even if he’d stayed healthy the entire contest, it was going to be a challenge to keep him that way day after day. In all likelihood, he’d have gone on the DL the minute Saunders came off it to help the Mariners avoid a roster curnch that would have forced them to jettison Chavez or somebody else before they were ready.
The reality is, their center field position is so precarious right now because of a lack of franchise-wide depth that they’d be insane to try to outright Chavez to AAA and risk losing him on waivers.
That would mean a DFA for either Raul Ibanez or Jason Bay and the Mariners simply are not ready to go that route. You don’t make the decisions they did on guys like that all winter and thrugh the spring just to cut them loose 3 1/2 weeks into the season because their numbers are down.
This way, they won’t have to.
