We were just handed the news that Jesus Montero has a tear of the meniscus in his left knee and will undergo surgery next week. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.
There’s no immediate word on how the injury occurred, but he was examined yesterday by Dr. Edward Khalfayan, the Mariners’ medical director.
Montero, 23, was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on May 22. He played seven games with the Rainiers, hitting .250 (7-for-28) with three doubles, a triple and two RBI. His last game was May 29 at Colorado Springs.
The Mariners had sent Montero down when his average hit .208, with ongoing struggles behind the plate. He was being used primarily at first base in the minors as the Mariners were backing off on his development as a catcher.
