Mariners catcher Jesus Sucre to miss ‘three or four days’

ADDITIONAL NOTE 10:27 a.m.: While I was typing this upstairs, Brandon Bantz walked into the clubhouse. So, he’s the second catcher. The Mariners have yet to officially announce the move but will soon.

Just got done talking to Mariners catcher Jesus Sucre in the clubhouse. He was running off to the trainers’ room, but told me new X-Rays found no bone breakage on the hand that got his by the backswing last night.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is, he said he’s going to be out “three or four days” at least before he can be used again.

That means the Mariners will need a second catcher behind Kelly Shoppach, who starts today behind the plate.

The Mariners have several options.

They can call up either Mike Zunino or Brandon Bantz from Class AAA, since it’s just a short ride up here from Tacoma and they could make it to the game even if phoned right now. Or, they could try to get by with today’s DH, Raul Ibanez, as an emergency catcher while they try to sign another guy.

Chris Snyder was just DFA yesterday, but it would be tough to trade for him and get him here so quickly. Hence, the dice roll with Ibanez for a day.

This will be an interesting call. As of right now, I don’t see another catcher in the clubhouse and none has reported to the ballpark as of yet.
