Seems the Mariners weren’t kidding when they said they were going to let Mike Zunino catch a little. Tonight will be Zunino’s third start in four games and his fourth start in five contests — though one of those was broken up by a team day off.
Zunino said he’s getting used to the whole big league routine and seeks advice about that from Raul Ibanez and Kyle Seager.
“I’m just trying to go about that and handle my business the right way so everything goes smoothly,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing. Just getting used to all the small stuff. It makes life a lot easier when you can just focus on playing the game.”
And for that on-field stuff, he has leaned on new catcher Henry Blanco already.
“Just what he goes about during the game, what he looks for in hitters,” Zunino said.
Zunino didn’t get a chance to meet A’s manager Bob Melvin, even though he played with Zunino’s dad, Greg, at the University of California.
