Game thread: Pirates 9, Mariners 2, top 9th

The Mariners are going for their third win in a row tonight against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Mariners are going for their third win in a row tonight against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

Carlos Triunfel hit a bloop single to center to bring home Raul Ibanez and cut Pittsburgh’s lead to 6-1 after two innings. Ibanez had led things off with a single, then took second on a walk drawn by Justin Smoak. Five more to go.

7:35 p.m.: Joe Saunders just gave up more runs in the second inning than in his last five starts combined, leading to his getting pulled two outs into it, on the short end of a 6-0 score.

Russell Martin led the second inning off with a solo homer to center off Saunders, then a single and a walk were followed by a three-run blast from Brandon Inge.

Just to rub it in, Starling Marte hit a solo homer and now needs a double and a single to hit for the cycle. Andrew McCutchen followed one out later with a double, earning Saunders the heave-ho in favor of Blake Beavan.

7:19 p.m.: Starling Marte led the game off with a triple to the right field corner on an 0-2 pitch by Joe Saunders. He quickly scored on a groundout  to the right side by Jody Mercer that gives the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

7:05 p.m.: Franklin Gutierrez is out once again, meaning the Mariners go with their senior citizens’ outfield tonight, featuring Raul Ibanez, 41, in left, Endy Chavez, 35, in center and Jason Bay, 34, in right.

Good thing Joe Saunders is pitching. Won’t see too many flyballs the Mariners need to chase after. Yes, I was being sarcastic.
