Mariners swept in short series where offense falls flat
This one was tied until the ninth, but Jordy Mercer delivered a run-scoring single to center and then a wild-pitch by Yoervis Medina made it 4-2 and the Pirates went on to win. They sweep this two-game series in which the Mariners managed just four hits off the starting pitcher last night and only three more today versus Jeanmar Gomez.
The Mariners got some things going against the Pittsburgh bullpen, but Justin Smoak struck out with runners at first and second and one out in the eighth. Michael Saunders then flied out to left and that was as close as the Mariners got.
So, the Mariners are back to 11 games under .500 as Charlie Furbush takes the loss today. We finally got to see Dustin Ackley get in the game as a pinch-runner for Kendrys Morales in the eighth. But all he got to do was stand there and watch Smoak and Saunders.
Mike Zunino got a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth against Mark Melancon, who isn’t exactly the “A” closer for the Pirates. Nick Franklin got a two-out single as well, but Kyle Seager grounded out on the first pitch and that was it.
