Hopefully, I’ll have an update later today on Danny Hultzen, who was scratched from his scheduled start with Tacoma yesterday when he couldn’t get loose. That’s an ominous sign for a guy who was sidelined two months with a rotator cuff strain, and had made just one start since coming back. Here’s today’s Mariners’ minor-league report.
There’s word today that catcher Kelly Shoppach, designated for assignment when the Mariners promoted Mike Zunino, has signed a Triple-A contract with the Washington Nationals and will report to Syracuse. And Baseball America, which has been all over the international signings — yesterday was the first day for teams to sign young foreign players in places like the Dominican Republic and Venezuela — reported that the Mariners signed Dominican catcher Onil Pena ($385,000 bonus) and Dominican outfielder Ronald Rosario ($350,000). Neither is ranked among their top 30 international prospects.
