Mike Zunino needs surgery for broken hamate; Mariners sign Quintero
Mike Zunino is out with a broken hamate bone in his left hand and will need surgery early next week. The approximate prognosis is he’ll miss six weeks — much of the rest of the season, if not all.
The Mariners just signed veteran catcher Humberto Quintero, 33, to take Zunino’s spot. Quinetro was designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday and opted to become a free agent.
Quintero is on a plane to Seattle right now and should arrive in time for the game.
Zunino had been complaining about a different type of pain in his left wrist after a ball was fouled off it. But the hamate bone — pretty useless for anything — broken when he swung at a pitch
