Game thread: Angels 2, Mariners 0, FINAL
Felix Hernandez served up a two-run homer to Chris Nelson in the top of the second inning and now trails 2-0. Hernandez gave up a leadoff single to Josh Hamilton before Nelson lined a ball over the left field wall. Hernandez nearly served up a second homer in the inning, but it was caught at the left field wall by Raul Ibanez.
In the bottom of the first, Kyle Seager drove a ball to the deepest part of the park in center with a runner on. ut Peter Bourjos reached up and snared the ball before it had a shot to clear the fence, colliding with the wall as he snagged the out.
Two teams fighting it out for third — or fourth — place, depending whether your glass is half-full or half-empty, collide tonight in the return of manager Eric Wedge to the dugout. Dustin Ackley returns to second base tonight as Nick Franklin is still out with those stitches in his knee. Franklin could return in a day or two.
The Angels have gone into compete crash and burn mode and — believe it or not — find themselves four games back of the Mariners in the standings. Seattle is coming off a 5-4 road trip in which they played a bunch of good teams tough and have Felix Hernandez pitching tonight.
Another difference in the direction the two clubs are headed? The Angels were said today to be mulling whether to fire GM Jerry DiPoto. The big talk in Seattle is whether the Mariners already gave a one-year extension to Jack Zdureincik at the end of last season and plan to keep him on beyond this year.
