Nick Franklin might be available to pinch hit for the Mariners during Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, manager Eric Wedge said.
Franklin had to get five stitches after cutting his knee while sliding into home during Tuesday’s game against Oakland. At the time, acting manager Robby Thompson said he hoped Franklin would be able to return either Friday or Saturday.
Wedge said he wants Franklin to pinch hit first, even if it means pinch-running for him if he gets on base.
“I don’t think we’re able to use him out there defensively just yet,” Wedge said.
Wedge also explained his decision to play Dustin Ackley at second base in last night’s game against the Angels. Ackley, of course, made the transition to the outfield earlier this season after playing second.
“I’m OK with it,” Wedge said. “We talked about early on when we made the transition, early on when we got him in the outfield, we wanted to stay away from (playing second). But once he had a little bit of time under his belt in the outfield, Robby and I talked about it and we talked about it with Jack (Zduriencik), I felt like it’s OK for him.”
Here is the Mariners lineup for Saturday night’s game:

1B Justin Smoak
