Felix Hernandez threw a bullpen session this afternoon that just concluded not too long ago. There had been a chance the Mariners might start Hernandez here in Detroit either on Wednesday or Thursday but that’s not going to happen.
Instead, the Mariners will use Hisashi Iwakuma on Wednesday, then James Paxton on Thursday. Erasmo Ramirez will go on Friday in Anaheim, then, after that, the rotation is open.
“Physically, he felt fine,” Mariners pitching coach Carl Willis said after the bullpen session. “It’s a couple of things. He feels too strong because he hadn’t been on the mound in such a long time. And I think because he hadn’t been on the mound in such a long time, he’s just a little erratic right now.”
Hernandez will throw another bullpen session in a few days.
“As far as going out and competing, one more bullpen is going to allow him to just tighten things up a little bit,” Willis said. “But on the physical side, he didn’t have any issues.”
What this effectively means in that Hernandez will make no more than two starts the rest of the season. He hasn’t pitched since leaving a start 13 days ago in Kansas City with a pain in his side.
