The Mariners wil attempt to salvage a split of their four-game series today against former Seattle starting pitcher Doug Fister.

Dustin Ackley hit a three-run homer to right field following two soft singles off Doug Fister to give the Mariners a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning.

The Tigers had taken a 3-1 lead in the third inning when James Paxton gave up a two-out single to Miguel Cabrera, then a double to left center by Prince Fielder. Victor Martinez was walked intentionally to load the bases and then walked Omar Infante on four pitches to force in a run. Paxton needed 78 pitches to get through the first four innings and is back out to work the fifth with the lead.

10:27 a.m.: The Mariners opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with three consecutive singles, the final one a blooper to right-center by Raul Ibanez off Doug Fister. But the Tigers just took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Torii Hunter took James Paxton deep to left to tie it, then — after a walk and a fielder’s choice by¬†Prince FielderVictor Martinez drove a ball to the warning track in left center.

The ball deflected off the glove of Raul Ibanez for a double and a hard-running Fielder scored all the way from first base on the play, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

In other news Felix Hernandez will make his next start on Sunday in Anaheim against the Angels after throwing 58 pitches in a bullpen session today.
