The Mariners lost their 90th game of the season tonight, 8-2 to the Oakland Athletics. That’s now three seasons in the last four years with 90 losses or more by Seattle. Felix Hernandez gave up a three-run homer in the first inning to Brandon Moss and that was all the visitors needed to saddle him with the defeat.
Hernandez finishes at 12-10.
If you missed it earlier, our Seattle BBWAA chapter handed out its annual awards before the game. We named Kyle Seager the team’s Player of the Year, Hisashi Iwakuma as Pitcher of the Year and Raul Ibanez as the team’s Unsung Hero.
That was about all the celebrating the Mariners got to do tonight. Kendrys Morales and Franklin Gutierrez hit solo homers, allowing Hernandez to leave after six innings trailing only 3-2. But the bullpen — again — could not hold it together.
7:10 p.m.: While the news of the day regarding Eric Wedge has obviously overshadowed tonight’s game, the Mariners still have to play it. Felix Hernandez makes his final start of the 2013 season, taking on Bartolo Colon of the Oakland Athletics.
This could be interesting because Colon is one of the guys Hisashi Iwakuma is chasing for the ERA crown. Colon and Anibal Sanchez lead with 2.64. Iwakuma is at 2.66. So, the M’s need to score at least two runs or three off Colon to help Iwakuma out. And not let him pitch a complete game.
