Mariners rumored to be interested in David Price

If you checked twitter earlier, you’ve seen the Mariners are one of several teams interested in trading for Rays lefty ace pitcher David Price. Jeff Passan of Yahoo first reported the growing interest.

There is definite possibility in this.

About a week ago, a baseball source said the Rays were looking at scouting reports and doing increased background and data analysis on five Mariners players: Pitchers Taijuan Walker and James Paxton and infielders Brad Miller, Dustin Ackley and Nick Franklin. The purpose was to find a potential return for Price. It was all very preliminary at the time. And it seemed a bit curious to me. Sure adding Price would make the Mariners better, but any trade involving Walker, deemed previously untouchable, figured to be unlikely.

But it seems with Passan’s report that the mutual interest has grown.

Obviously, there’s been a fair amount of discussion, debate and mostly overreaction on Twitter.

Walker is young and largely unproven, but filled with dominating potential and also under club control for six more years. Price is a proven big league ace, who’s won a Cy Young award. But he has only two years left on his contract and the odds of him signing an extension instead of testing the free agent market are slim. It’s the reason why Tampa is shopping him.

Zduriencik was asked about trading young prospects today in the conference call. His response:

“You’d prefer not to, but you never know how it’s going to play out,” he said. “You don’t know how you’re going to cross that bridge until the discussions get very specific in terms of players. I do think we like the young core group of guys here. We like what we’ve done. We like the arms that are here. But, again, if you have an opportunity to make your ball club better, you have to always keep the door open, always make yourself available for discussion and see where it ends up. ”

I don’t know if that’s an answer or gives us any hints, but that’s what he said.

So the Mariners could possibly acquire Robinson Cano and David Price this offseason? I will now prepare for Armageddon.
