Mariners announce non-roster invites to major league spring training

The Mariners announced that 19 players, who are not on the 40-man roster, have been added to their spring training roster with invites to Peoria.

Of the 19, 16 played in the Mariners organization last season and 14 were  originally drafted or signed by Seattle.

Shortstop Chris Taylor, the 2013 Mariners minor league player of the year and right-hander Carson Smith, the 2013 Mariners minor league reliever of the year, have gotten invites.

In 134 games (67 with High Desert, 67 with Jackson), Taylor hit .314 with an .865 on-base plus slugging percentage. He’s considered one of the top fielding shortstops in the organization.

This will be the second invite to big league spring training for Smith. He went 1-3 with 15 saves and a 1.80 ERA in 44 appearances for Double A Jackson. He allowed just five earned runs in his last 32 relief appearances and no runs in his last 16 2/3 innings pitched.

Smith and hard-throwing right-hander Dominic Leone, who went 1-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 16 appearances with Jackson after being promoted from Class A High Desert, could do what Shawn Kelley did in 2009 and make the big league bullpen out of spring.

Pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in Peoria, AZ on Feb. 12 (physicals) and holds its first workout Feb. 13. Position players are scheduled to report for physicals Feb. 17 and the first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 18.
