Mariners 8, Dodgers 5 — another split squad sweep

BOX SCORE … 03.08.14 Box Score at LAD

Remember when writing that the Mariners  are “a Cactus League juggernaut” that you use two Gs. Seattle swept a split squad double header on a splendid Saturday here in the Arizona sunshine.

Jesus Montero, yes, Jesus Montero blasted a pair of homers, Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer and Stefen Romero had a solo homer and a double.

The Mariners fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Dee Gordon caused havoc on the base paths, Scott Van Slyke had a RBI single and Montero booted a ground ball at first that allowed two runs to score.

Seattle came back as Montero hit a two-run homer to right-center that was hit pretty hard.  Romero followed with a line-drive laser over the left field wall.

The Mariners took the lead in the third when Smoak hit a towering fly ball that carried over the wall in right-center.

Stefen Romero had the defensive play of the game when he threw out Dee Gordon at home on sac fly tag up. Gordon may have actually been safe looking at the replays. But Romero did a good job of getting his feet set and moving forward toward home as he caught the ball allowing him to make a strong throw home.

Montero hit his second homer of the game in the eighth inning.
