Almonte optioned to Class AAA Tacoma

The Mariners announced after the game that outfielder Abraham Almonte had been optioned to Class AAA Tacoma. No corresponding roster move has been made yet. They probably won’t announce it until tomorrow.

Expect outfielder James Jones to be getting the call. The Mariners want someone who can play center field because they don’t believe Saunders is an every day center fielder but more of a corner outfielder. Jones is not in the line-up in Tacoma for the first game of the doubleheader.

After a miserable game on Friday where he committed two errors in the field and went 0-for-3, including a league-leading 40th strikeout, it was apparent he needed to go to Tacoma to figure some things out. Almonte understood the decision.

“I need to just go down there and feel like how I used to feel at the plate and I think everything will be fine,” he said.

McClendon could have made the move yesterday, but I think they let Almonte have a day with the team before sending him out. With the team in Oakland, it will be much easier to get his replacement to the stadium.
