For people who were hoping the Mariners would sign Kendrys Morales. You can now give up that hope.

So there is that. Haven’t heard the parameters of the deal yet. But that means if the Mariners hope to add a bad it will be through the trade market. And they don’t exactly have a lot of chips to offer teams. Another issue is that with the second wild card more and more teams feel they have a chance and don’t dump pieces quite as soon as in the past.

Update 1:02 p.m.

Manager Lloyd McClendon said that Michael Saunders is still considered “day-to-day” after injuring his shoulder swinging in Friday night’s game.

“I think their doctor (Rays) is going to look at him today just to make sure everything is okay,” McClendon said.

Saunders hasn’t undergone any MRIs or scans.

McClendon decided to keep Justin Smoak out of the line-up today after seeing him struggle with the sore left quad in Friday’s game.

“His leg was a little sore,” McClendon said. “I thought the two days would clean it up, but he was dragging it really bad yesterday. His running was not good at all. He’s not a speedster by any stretch of the imagination, but he was really, really dragging it yesterday. I just didn’t like what I saw.”

Said Smoak:  “It was a little bit more of the same. I’ll give it a rest tonight and go from there. I actually felt really good yesterday during BP and before the game. Then the first at-bat, running down … it’s not something like it’s real crazy. Just a little bit of the same. It’s a little tight in there. I just have to keep trying to loosen it up.”

McClendon is comfortable with Bloomquist at first base.

“He’s okay,” McClendon said. “Hell, he catches the ball. I don’t look for him to make any spectacular plays. Just make the routine plays and catch the ball. Maybe he can give us a little more magic. He did in Atlanta.”

From earlier

As expected, Michael Saunders is out of the lineup today after injuring his shoulder on a swing last night in the game. Justin Smoak is out of the line-up as well. He’s battling a sore quad and his numbers have plummeted.

Not much else going on. They will have a tribute to Don Zimmer tonight. Also Weezer is playing a concert postgame, which I actually won’t mind too much.

The final day of the MLB draft is today. Lots of picks of players none of us have probably ever heard of. I will probably try and update that with a separate blog post.
