FINAL: Yankees 4, Mariners 2

Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees’ prized rookie pitcher, dazzled on Wednesday night. He gave up a two-run homer to Robinson Cano in the ninth inning to break his shutout, but he was still really good in handcuffing the Mariners most of the night. He struck out 11 batters and allowed only six hits.

Bottom 9th: Robinson Cano hits a two-run homer after James Jones reached on a single that probably should have been scored an error. Yankees 4, Mariners 2.

Top 9th: Joe Beimel comes in and gives up one hit but that’s all. One last chance for Mariners. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Bottom 8th: Mike Zunino doubles and Brad Miller singles with one out. But Cole Gillespie pops out and Brad Miller runs into a double play by being overaggressive. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Top 8th: Wilhelmsen gets the Yankees in order. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Bottom 7th: Seager walks with one out, but Tanaka gets an inning-ending double play. He’s been incredible. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Top 7th: Wilhelmsen gives up a single and walk and Derek Jeter steals his second of the game (and only third of the season) but the Yankees can’t add any more insurance runs. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Bottom 6th: Tanaka is in cruise control. He strikes out the side. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Top 6th: Yankees go down in order vs. Tom Wilhelmsen. Young exits after five innings an four runs, all earned. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Bottom 5th: Ackley, Zunino and Miller go down in order. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Top 5th: Mark Teixeira muscles a three-run homer to right-center field off Chris Young with one out. Young had been wobbling since the first inning. Yankees 4, Mariners 0.

Bottom 4th: James Jones breaks up Masahiro Tanaka’s perfect game with a single, and Kyle Seager also singles with two outs. But Logan Morrison strikes out swinging against Tanaka. Yankees 1, Mariners 0.

Top 4th: Ichiro singles, but that’s all the base runners Young allows. Keeping the M’s in it on a night Tanaka looks awesome. Yankees 1, Mariners 0.

Bottom 3rd: Zunino, Miller and Gillespie go down in order. Tanaka perfect through three. He’s thrown 26 pitches, 20 strikes. Yankees 1, Mariners 0.

Top 3rd: Brian Roberts led off with a walk and Brett Gardner reached on a walk. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a bloop single that drove in a run. Yankees 1, Mariners 0.

Bottom 2nd: Seager, Morrison and Ackley went down in order. Mariners 0, Yankees 0.

Top 2nd: Young gets the Yankees to go down in order. Mariners 0, Yankees 0.

Bottom 1st: Chavez, Jones and Cano down in order against Tanaka, who made quick work of the Mariners. Mariners 0, Yankees 0.

Top 1st: Chris Young gives up a single to Derek Jeter and walks Mark Teixeira, but he also strikes out two in the inning and doesn’t give up any runs. Mariners 0, Yankees 0.
