Mariners minor league report, June 24 — DJ Peterson, Gabriel Guerrero named to All-Star Futures Game

DJ Peterson

DJ Peterson

It’s been an eventful couple of days for DJ Peterson. The Mariners hard hitting infield prospect was promoted to Class AA Jackson after last night’s game and today he and Gabriel Guerrero were named to the US Futures Team. Peterson will play for the US team and Guerrero is an outfielder on the World team.

Peterson homered last night in his final game with High Desert.  From the report: He has hit 16 of his 18 home runs this season in his last 37 games (since 5/11). Peterson has hit safely in each of his last 10 games with 8 mutli-hit efforts, batting .442 (19×43) with 11 runs scored, 7 doubles, 6 home runs, 22 RBI, 5 walks and 1 stolen base. He has also hit safely 20 of his last 22 games, batting .424 (39×92) with 22 runs scored, 13 doubles, 9 home runs, 35 RBI, 11 walks and 2 stolen bases. Since May 8, he is batting .363 (61×168) with 36 runs scored, 19 doubles, 16 home runs, 57 RBI, 17 walks and 4 stolen bases. During this stretch he has raised his season batting average from .267 to .326.

Guerrero is hitting .313 with a .816 OPS.  He has 16 doubles, a triple, eight homers and 50 RBI and 12 stolen bases for High Desert

Class AAA Tacoma

Xavier Nady had a walk-off single to lead the Rainiers to a 9-8 win over OKC. The rehabbing Mariners had big games. Michael Saunders went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. I think he’s ready to come back. Justin Smoak went 1-for-5 with a walk and a homer. Nick Franklin also hit a homer. Corey Hart had two hits including a double and a triple. Here’s video of Smoak’s homer, which he hit swinging right-handed.

  • Quick note: Nady has an opt out in his contract for today. I haven’t heard whether he will exercise it. But it doesn’t appear he’s an option for the Mariners. Several scouts feel that his days of being a serious MLB contributor are done. Update: Nady is in the line-up tonight.

Class AA Jackson

The Generals lost 7-4 at Mississippi. Kevin Rivers and Daniel Paolini each drove in two runs. Peterson isn’t in the line-up tonight. It will be interesting how they separate time at third base with Patrick Kivlehan. The two hard-hitting third baseman also took turns playing first base.

Kivlehan had the night off. But he
