Felix Hernandez was named the American League pitcher of the month on Wednesday afternoon. He beat out Garrett Richards of the Angels and Jon Lester of the Red Sox. Hernandez compiled a 3-1 record with a 1.22 ERA, six walks and 54 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched over six starts to claim the honor for the fourth time in his career.
Perhaps that’s why he seemed unimpressed with his own success.
“What kind of reaction do you want?” he said with a grin and raised his hand and made a loud noise.
But Hernandez was appreciative of being recognized for his efforts.
“I’m happy,” he said. “That means I’m pitching pretty good, right? So I’m just happy to be pitcher of the month.”
The run of stellar pitching will definitely earn him a spot in the all-star game and possibly a chance to start.
“It’s been pretty good,” he said. “But I’ve got to keep going. It’s not only one month it’s going to be the whole season.”
While he was successful in June, the Mariners were just as good, going 18-10.
“Yeah, that’s what makes me more happy, if we’re winning,” he said.
