Game thread: Mariners at White Sox — July 6, 2014

THIS DAY IN MARINERS HISTORY (July 6):

  • 1985 – Phil Bradley snapped a 3-3 tie with an 8th inning homer to fuel the Mariners to a 5-3 win over Milwaukee, in the Kingdome.
  • 1989 – Mike Schooler saves all three games of the July 4-6 series vs. Minnesota.
  • 1996 – Seattle sweeps the three game series at Texas as Edgar Martinez homers three times and Alex Rodriguez hits his third grand slam of the year. The Mariners win 9-5.
  • 1998 – Ken Griffey Jr. wins the home run hitting derby in Denver.
  • 2001 – Ichiro hits his first career lead-off HR off Los Angeles’ Kevin Brown.
  • 2009 – Jarrod Washburn throws the 10th complete-game one-hitter in Mariner history, marking only the 5th time in club history that a Mariners pitcher has faced 28 or fewer batters in a 9.0 inning complete game.

Any predictions on how the Mariners will fare against the White Sox today?

First inning

Noesi works a 1-2-3 inning. Can’t say I’ve typed that sentence too often. But it would be so much like the Mariners to struggle against Noesi.

Walker gets the first outs, but then struggles. He walked Conor Gillaspie, gave up a single to Jose Abreu, walked Adam Dunn, got a stern visit from McClendon, wild pitched a run home and then got out of the inning on a nifty stop by Brad Miller.

White Sox 1, Mariners 0

Second inning

Corey Hart leads off with a single and quickly advances on a wild pitch. But he was stuck at second as Seager popped up, Morrison grounded out to Noesi and Buck struck out.

Walker gave up a two-out double, but had a much smoother inning.

White Sox 1, Mariners 0

Third inning

Ackley leads off with a single. But the M’s do nothing there.

Walker continues to labor. He issues two more walks and a wild pitch in the inning. John Buck, who isn’t as good as Zunino defensively, is struggling behind the plate to catch him.

White Sox 1, Mariners 0

 Fourth inning

Hart reaches with a one-out walk, Seager reaches on an error, but Morrison flew out and Buck lined out.

Could Noesi be pitching one of these games?

Walker issues a lead0ff walk to Viciedo, but gets out of the inning. He’s at 83 pitches now.

White Sox 1, Mariners 0

Fifth inning

Mariners don’t get anything even though Brad Miller reached on a one out single.

Walker is done after four innings. Dom Leone came in and struck out Gordon Beckham, hit Conor Gillaspie in the knee, knocking him out of the game, got Abreu to pop  up , walked Adam Dunn and got Ramirez to ground into a force play to end the inning.

White Sox 1, Mariners 0

Sixth inning

A lead off walk to Cano results in nothing.

Leone goes 1-2-3

White Sox 1, Mariners 0
