Mariners minor league report, August 11 — Taijuan Walker dominates for Tacoma

Here is today’s Mariners’ minor league round-up, which offers the team’s official minor league report from Kelly Munro that features, notes, stats and box scores. There are also game results on all of the organization’s minor league affiliates that were in action.

Class AAA Tacoma

Taijuan Walker delivered the kind of performance the Mariners want to see from with Class AAA Tacoma. Walker pitched seven innings, allowing one run on two hits with a walk and 13 strikeouts in the Rainiers’ 2-1 win.  John Hicks and James Jones drove in the runs for the Mariners.

  • Michael Saunders went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Saunders is 5-for-12 with 2 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBI and 7 walks in 4 rehab starts with Tacoma.
  • From the report: RHP Taijuan Walker struck out a career-high 13 batters in 7.0 innings on Aug. 10 vs. Fresno (previous: 12 K on 6/20/13 vs. Mobile w/Jackson). His 13 striketouts with Tacoma were the most by a Rainiers pitcher since Rich Dorman struck out 14 on Aug. 29, 2006 vs. Salt Lake. It was Walker’s 6th career start with at least 10 strikeouts (last: 10 K on 4/9/14 vs. Mississippi w/Jackson). OF Stefen Romero is batting .538 (7×13) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 2 walks in last 3 games. Since being optioned to AAA Tacoma, Romero is batting .367 (11×30) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 10 RBI and 4 walks. INF Ty Kelly has nit safely in 9 of his last 10 games with 6 mutli-hit contests, batting .457 (16×35) with 10 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 4 RBI, 6 walks and 1 stolen base. 1B Justin Smoak has recorded a hit in 6 of his last 7 games, batting .357 (10×28) with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 3 walks. 

Class AA Jackson

The Generals lost 9-8 to Pensacola, blowing a 7-6 lead. Patrick Kivlehan  went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and five RBI. DH Jordy Lara had had two hits and drove in two runs. Starter Tyler Pike last just 2/3 of an inning, giving up five runs on three hits with a walk and two homers allowed.

  • In his first at-bat, DJ Peterson fouled a ball off the inside of his calf and removed from the game for precautionary reasons.
  • Shortstop Ketel Marte was promoted to Class AAA Tacoma yesterday.
  • From the report: OF Jordy Lara his hit safely in each of his last 9 games, batting .417 (15×36) with 4 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 home run, 10 RBI and 1 walk. Overall Lara is batting .320 (14×46) with 5 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 home run, 10 RBI and 4 walks in 13 games with Jackson. INF Patrick Kivlehan has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games, batting .400 (12×30) with 8 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 4 walks.

Class A High Desert

The Mavs managed just five hits in a 7-1 loss to Lake Elsinore. Burt Reynolds hit his ninth home for the Mavs only run. Starter Spencer Hermann pitched  3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.

  • From the report: INF Lonnie Kauppila currently has an 8-game hit streak, batting .344 (11×32) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBI and 1 walk. INF Tyler Smith has recorded 11 multi-hit games over his last 27 games, batting .333 (33×100) with 21 runs scored, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 15 RBI and 13 walks. RH Andrew Kittredge is averaging 12.92 strikeouts per 9.0 innings over 34 relief appearances with High Desert (100 SO/69.2 IP). Ovearall this season he has struck out a career-high 105 batters in 76.2 innings combined between High Desert (100), Jackson (3) and Everett (2) in 37 appearances. He currently ranks 3rd among all Mariners minor league pitchers in strikeouts. 

Class A Clinton

The LumberKings lost 2-1 with Aaron Barbaos driving in the only run of the game. Barbosa had three hits. Starter Blake Holovach pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

  • From the report: OF Aaron Barbosa has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .339 (20×59) with 12 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 14 walks and 10 stolen bases. Since July 20, Reinheimer is batting .306 (26×85) with 12 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 home run, 6 RBI, 10 walks and 6 stolen bases. 

Short A Everett

Tough game for the Frogs as they were no-hit for 11 innings in a 3-0 loss to Spokane. Four Indians’ pitchers combined for the feat.

  • From the report: RH Daniel Altavilla is 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA (5 ER, 17.0 IP) in his last 3 starts. RHP Ryan Yarbrough has allowed only 2 hits in 9.0 scoreless innings over his last 3 starts. Overall with Everett he is 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA (5 ER, 24.0 IP), while walking 2 and striking out 34 in 8 games/6 starts. RH Brett Ash has not allowed a run over his last 8.0 innings in relief (2 G). During this stretch he has limited opponets to a .214 (6×28) average, while walking 2 and striking out 7. RH Kody Kerski has allowed only 1 run over his last 14.1 innings in 10 games since July 13. During this stretch he is 2-1 with 3 saves and a 0.63 ERA. Overall this season he is 3-2 with 3 saves and a 1.55 ERA (5 ER, 29.0 IP) in 18 relief appearances. He has limited opponents to a .187 (20×107) average, while walking 12 and striking out 37.

Rookie League Pulaski

The M’s were rained out again.

  • From the report: OF Estarlyn Morales has hit safely in 17 of his last 21 games, batting .395 (30×76) with 18 runs scored, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs, 17 RBI, 10 walks and 6 stolen bases. RH Trey Cochran-Gill has allowed only 1 earned run in 24.0 innings in 17 relief appearances, including 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his career. Overall 3-0 with 8 saves, while limited opponents to a .153 (13×84) average with 2 walks and 30 strikeouts. LH Spencer Hermann has not allowed in earned run in 20.1 innings over 6 games, 1 start between the AZL Mariners and Pulaski. Overall he is 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 20.1 IP), while walking 6 and striking out 19. 

Rookie League Arizona

The Mariners picked up a 4-3 win. Ismael Alcantrara and Gareth Morgan each drove in runs.

  • From the report: RH Osmel Morales has not allowed a run in his last 15.0 innings, dating back to July 17 (3 G). INF Erick Mejia has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games, batting .400 (12×30) with 8 runs scored, 3 triples, 1 home run, 4 RBI, 4 walks and 6 stolen bases. After batting .167 (4×24) over his first 9 games with the Mariners, Mejia has hit safely in 13 of his last 17 games, batting .311 (19×61) with 15 runs scored, 1 double, 4 triples, 1 home run, 5 RBI, 7 walks and 8 stolen bases.
