Mariners minor league report, August 12 — Jesus Montero named PCL player of the month for July

In news that will please ESPN 710’s Jim Moore, the unofficial president of the Jesus Montero fan club, Minor League Baseball announced today that Tacoma Rainiers designated hitters/first baseman  was  named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for July.

Montero, 24, led the PCL with 33 RBI and 72 total bases in 27 games with the Rainiers last month. He ranked second in the league in slugging percentage (.692) and extra-base hits (17), and third in total hits with 39. Montero turned in 12 multi-hit games over that stretch, including a season-high 5-for-5, six-RBI performance at Salt Lake on July 4.

In 94 games with the Rainiers this season, Montero is batting .290 (102×352) with 24 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs and 74 RBI. He ranks first on the team in extra-base hits (41), total bases (176) and home runs, and sits eighth in the league in RBI.

Class AAA Tacoma

The Rainiers lost 4-3 in 11 innings. Stefen Romero was thrown at home trying to score the tying run on a sac fly to end the game. Ketel Marte went 2-for-5 in his Class AAA debut.

  • From the report: RHP Taijuan Walker struck out a career-high 13 batters in 7.0 innings on Aug. 10 vs. Fresno (previous: 12 K on 6/20/13 vs. Mobile w/Jackson). His 13 striketouts with Tacoma were the most by a Rainiers pitcher since Rich Dorman struck out 14 on Aug. 29, 2006 vs. Salt Lake. It was Walker’s 6th career start with at least 10 strikeouts (last: 10 K on 4/9/14 vs. Mississippi w/Jackson). OF Stefen Romero is batting .500 (9×18) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 8 RBI and 2 walks in last 4 games. Since being optioned to AAA Tacoma, Romero is batting .371 (13×35) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 11 RBI and 4 walks. INF Ty Kelly has nit safely in 10 of his last 11 games with 7 mutli-hit contests, batting .462 (18×39) with 10 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 4 RBI, 6 walks and 1 stolen base.

Class AA Jackson

The Generals had an off day. But they did make roster move.  Infielder Tyler Smith was promoted from Class A High Desert, to take the place of Ketel Marte, who was called up to Tacoma. Smith, 23, the Mariners’ 8th round selection in the 2013 draft out of Oregon State was batting .284 (120×422), with 81 runs scored, 19 doubles, 7 triples, 9 home runs and 44 RBI’s in 107 games. Smith also tallied 11 stolen bases and posted a .377 on-base percentage. He has recorded 11 multi-hit games over his last 27 games, batting .333 (33×100) with 21 runs scored, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 15 RBI and 13 walks

DJ Peterson is not in the lineup again tonight. He fouled a ball off the inside of his leg on Sunday in his first at-bat and was taken out of the game. Tyler Smith is in the lineup tonight for Jackson.

  • From the report: OF Jordy Lara his hit safely in each of his last 9 games, batting .417 (15×36) with 4 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 home run, 10 RBI and 1 walk. Overall Lara is batting .320 (14×46) with 5 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 home run, 10 RBI and 4 walks in 13 games with Jackson. INF Patrick Kivlehan has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games, batting .400 (12×30) with 8 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 4 walks.

 

Class A High Desert

  • From the report: INF Lonnie Kauppila currently has an 8-game hit streak, batting .344 (11×32) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBI and 1 walk.  RH Andrew Kittredge is averaging 12.92 strikeouts per 9.0 innings over 34 relief appearances with High Desert (100 SO/69.2 IP). Ovearall this season he has struck out a career-high 105 batters in 76.2 innings combined between High Desert (100), Jackson (3) and Everett (2) in 37 appearances. He currently ranks 3rd among all Mariners minor league pitchers in strikeouts. 

 

Class A Clinton

  • From the report: OF Aaron Barbosa has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .339 (20×59) with 12 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 14 walks and 10 stolen bases. Since July 20, Reinheimer is batting .306 (26×85) with 12 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 home run, 6 RBI, 10 walks and 6 stolen bases. 

 

Short A Everett

The Aqua Sox lost 3-2 t0 Spoakane in a 10-inning lightning delayed game. Nick Patterson of the Herald also has this story on the pitching issues facing the Frogs. Catcher Luke Guarnaccia had to pitch in last night’s loss.

  • From the report: RH Daniel Altavilla is 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA (5 ER, 17.0 IP) in his last 3 starts. RHP Ryan Yarbrough has allowed only 2 hits in 9.0 scoreless innings over his last 3 starts. Overall with Everett he is 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA (5 ER, 24.0 IP), while walking 2 and striking out 34 in 8 games/6 starts. RH Brett Ash has not allowed a run over his last 8.0 innings in relief (2 G). During this stretch he has limited opponets to a .214 (6×28) average, while walking 2 and striking out 7. 

 

Rookie League Pulaski

The Mariners split a doubleheader with Princeton. Estarlyn Morales had three hits and two RBI in the opener, but Pulaski lost 3-2. In the nightcap, starter Taylor Byrd and reliever Rohn Pierce combined on a 4-hit, 3-0 shutout win.  Byrd pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing four hits, while walking one and striking out three. Pierce got the win, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings with four strikeouts.

    OF Estarlyn Morales has hit safely in 19 of his last 23 games with 11 multi-hit contests, batting .410 (34×83) with 19 runs scored, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs, 19 RBI, 10 walks and 7 stolen bases. INF Jay Baum currently has an 8-game hit streak, batting .320 (8×25) with 3 runs scored, 1 RBI, 5 walks and 2 stolen bases. RH Trey Cochran-Gill has allowed only 2 earned runs in 25.2 innings in 18 relief appearances, including 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his career. Overall 3-0 with 8 saves, while limiting opponents to a .165 (15×91) average with 3 walks and 33 strikeouts. LH Taylor Bryd has not allowed a run over his last 13.0 innings over his last 4 starts (since allowing a run in the 2nd innings on July 16 at Johnson City).

 

Rookie League Arizona

The Mariners lost 9-4, but Gareth Morgan and Ismael Alcantrara each went 2-for-4 with a homer.

  • From the report: RH Osmel Morales has not allowed a run in his last 15.0 innings, dating back to July 17 (3 G). INF Erick Mejia has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games, batting .400 (14×35) with 8 runs scored, 4 triples, 1 home run, 5 RBI, 4 walks and 6 stolen bases. After batting .167 (4×24) over his first 9 games with the Mariners, Mejia has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games, batting .352 (19×54) with 13 runs scored, 1 double, 4 triples, 1 home run, 6 RBI, 7 walks and 8 stolen bases. RH Ronald Dominguez is 2-1 with 1 save and a 0.59 ERA (2 ER, 30.2 IP) in 13 relief appearances. Overall he has limited opponents to a .158 (16×101) average, while walking 7 and striking out 29
