Mariners minor league report, August 14 — Roenis Elias, DJ Peterson have big performances

Here is today’s Mariners’ minor league round-up, which offers the team’s official minor league report from Kelly Munro that features, notes, stats and box scores. There are also game results on all of the organization’s minor league affiliates that were in action.

 

Class AAA Tacoma

Roenis Elias threw five no-hit innings and needed just 62 pitches to do so in Tacoma’s 4-2 win over New Orleans. Elias will return to the Mariners’ rotation on August 19 or 20 to pitch for the Mariners.

  • From the report: INF Ketel Marte has hit safely in each of his first 3 games with Tacoma, batting .417 (5×12) with 2 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases. Dating back to July 30 with AA Jackson, Marte has hit safely in each of his last 12 games, batting .367 (18×49) with 8 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 home run, 6 RBI, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases. OF Stefen Romero currently has a 6-game hitting streak, batting .448 (11×27) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 11 RBI and 2 walks. Since being optioned to AAA Tacoma, Romero is batting .341 (15×44) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 2 triples, 4 home runs, 14 RBI and 4 walks. 1B Justin Smoak has recorded a hit in 9 of his last 10 games, batting .378 (14×37) with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, 3 RBI and 7 walks. C John Hicks has hit safely in 13 of 16 games since his promotion to Tacoma, batting .328 (19×58) with 8 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 3 walks and 1 stolen base. 

Class AA Jackson

The Generals swept a double header from Birmingham by scores of 2-1 and 8-1. DJ Peterson delivered a walk-off single to win game one. Patrick Kivlehan and Steve Baron each had two hits in the game. Starter Tyler Olson worked all seven innings to get the win. . In the nightcap, Peterson homered and drove in three runs to lead the attack.

  • From the report: After recording 1 hit in his first 14 AA at-bats (.071), OF Jordy Lara his hit safely in each of his last 10 of his last 12 games, batting .378 (17×45) with 4 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 home run, 13 RBI and 2 walks. Overall Lara is batting .305 (18×59) with 5 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 home run, 13 RBI and 5 walks in 14 games with Jackson. INF Patrick Kivlehan has hit safely in 9 of his last 11 games, batting .410 (16×39) with 9 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 6 walks. INF D.J. Peterson leads all Mariners farmhands with 26 home runs and 97 RBI this season combined between High Desert and Jackson. Among all minor league players this season, Peterson ranks 3rd in RBI and T9th in home runs. Over his last 3 starts in August, LH Tyler Olson is 2-1 with a 0.47 ERA (1 ER, 19.1 IP). During this stretch he has limited opponents to a .200 (14×70) average, while walking 4 and striking out 16.

Class A High Desert

Jabari Henry and Tyler Marlette each homered and drove in a combined seven runs in a 13- 2 win.  Gabby Guerrero and Jack Reinheimer had three hits each in the game.

  • From the report: C Tyler Marlette has recorded 5 hits in his last 10 at-bats with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles 2 home runs and 6 RBI. He has recorded 19 of his 46 RBI this season in his last 16 games (since 7/24), including 7 multi-RBI games. INF Lonnie Kauppila currently has a 9-game hit streak, batting .361 (13×36) with 4 runs scored, 1 double, 3 RBI and 1 walk. OF Jabari Henry currently has a 5-game hit streak, batting .381 (8×21) wtith 2 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run and 4 RBI. RH Andrew Kittredge is averaging 12.86 strikeouts per 9.0 innings over 35 relief appearances with High Desert (101 SO/70.2 IP). Ovearall this season he has struck out a career-high 106 batters in 77.2 innings combined between High Desert (101), Jackson (3) and Everett (2) in 39 appearances. He currently ranks 3rd among all Mariners minor league pitchers in strikeouts. 

 

Class A Clinton

The LumberKings rallied for a 4-2 win on key hits from Joe DeCarlo and Jeff Zimmerman.

  • From the report: OF Aaron Barbosa has hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games, batting .324 (22×68) with 12 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 14 walks and 10 stolen bases. INF Joe DeCarlo has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games, batting .367 (11×30) with 7 runs scored, 5 doubles, 5 RBI and 4 walks. LH Paul Fry is 2-1 with 1 save and a 1.13 ERA (2 ER, 16.0 IP) over his last 11 relief appearances. 

 

Short A Everett

The Aqua Sox lost 7-6 in 14 innings to Vancouver. James Alfonso had four hits, while Isaiah Yates and Kristian Brito each had three hits.

  • From the report: OF Austin Cousino has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games, batting .323 (21×65) with 10 runs scored, 10 doubles, 6 RBI, 9 walks and 2 stolen bases. RH Daniel Altavilla is 4-0 with a 3.13 ERA (8 ER, 23.0 IP) in his last 4 starts, after going 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA (18 ER, 25.0 IP) in his first 7 career starts (6/17-7/19). RHP Ryan Yarbrough has allowed only 2 hits in 9.0 scoreless innings over his last 3 starts. Overall with Everett he is 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA (5 ER, 24.0 IP), while walking 2 and striking out 34 in 8 games/6 starts. RH Brett Ash has not allowed a run over his last 8.0 innings in relief (2 G). During this stretch he has limited opponets to a .214 (6×28) average, while walking 2 and striking out 7. 

 

Rookie League Pulaski

The Mariners split a doubleheader with Johnson City.

  • From the report: INF Gianfranco Wawoe has hit safely in 5 of his last 8 games with 4 multi-hit efforts, batting .313 (10×32) with 5 rusns scored, 2 doubles, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. RH Trey Cochran-Gill has allowed only 2 earned runs in 25.2 innings in 18 relief appearances, including 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his career. Overall 3-0 with 8 saves, while limiting opponents to a .165 (15×91) average with 3 walks and 33 strikeouts. LH Taylor Bryd has not allowed a run over his last 13.0 innings over his last 4 starts (since allowing a run in the 2nd innings on July 16 at Johnson City). 

 

Rookie League Arizona

The Mariners scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, getting the walk off win on a wild pitch.

  • From the report: RH Osmel Morales has not allowed a run in his last 16.1 innings, dating back to July 17 (4 G). Overall this season he is 3-2 with a 2.41 ERA (10 ER, 37.1 IP) in 8 games/6 starts. INF Erick Mejia has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, batting .395 (15×38) with 8 runs scored, 4 triples, 1 home run, 5 RBI, 4 walks and 6 stolen bases. After batting .167 (4×24) over his first 9 games with the Mariners, Mejia has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games, batting .351 (20×57) with 13 runs scored, 1 double, 4 triples, 1 home run, 6 RBI, 7 walks and 8 stolen bases.
