Mariners minor league report, August 19

Here is today’s Mariners’ minor league round-up, which offers the team’s official minor league report from Kelly Munro that features, notes, stats and box scores. There are also game results on all of the organization’s minor league affiliates that were in action.

 

Class AAA Tacoma

The Rainiers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 6-2 win. Justin Smoak drove in three runs and Steven Romero had three hits and a RBI in the win. Jordan Pries tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Michael Saunders went 0-for-3 with two walks.

  • From the report: OF Stefen Romero currently has an 11-game hitting streak, batting .500 (24×48) with 13 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, 17 RBI and 4 walks. Since being optioned to AAA Tacoma on Aug. 1, Romero is batting .431 (28×65) with 15 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 20 RBI and 6 walks in 15 games. 1B Justin Smoak has hit safely in each of his last 8 games, batting .467 (14×30) with 8 runs scored, 5 doubles, 7 RBI and 8 walks. He has recorded a hit in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .389 (21×54) with 12 runs scored, 7 doubles, 8 RBI and 10 walks. C John Hicks has hit safely in 16 of 20 games since his promotion to Tacoma, batting .324 (24×74) with 9 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 17 RBI, 4 walks and 1 stolen base.

Class AA Jackson

The Generals were postponed by rain

  • From the report: OF Dario Pizzano currently has a 5-game hit streak, batting .400 (8×20) with 3 runs 4 doubles, 1 home run, 6 RBI and 5 walks. OF Leon Landry has recorded a hit in each of his last 8 games, batting .333 (12×36) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 triple, 1 home run, 1 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen base. INF Patrick Kivlehan has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .333 (19×57) with 12 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 10 RBI, 6 walks and 3 stolen bases. Over his last 3 starts in August, LH Tyler Olson is 2-1 with a 0.47 ERA (1 ER, 19.1 IP). During this stretch he has limited opponents to a .200 (14×70) average, while walking 4 and striking out 16. LH Kyle Hunter has not allowed a run over his last 17.1 innings (10G/1GS). During this stretch, since July 16, Hunter has limited opponents to a .197 (12×61) average, while walking 4 and striking 9. RH Trevor Miller has not allowed an earned run in his last 18.2 innings over 7 relief appearances. During this stretch, since July 24, he has limited opponents to a .190 (12×63) average, while walking 2 and striking out 17.

Class A High Desert

Jabari Henry blasted a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Mavericks to a 3-1 win over Inland Empire. Gabby Guerrero, Zach Shank, Chantz Mack and Burt Reynolds accounted for High Desert’s other hits. The Mavericks had a bullpen start with five pitchers limiting Inland Empire to one run on five hits.

  • From the report: OF Gabby Guerrero has hit safely in 4 of his last 6 games with 3 multi-hit contests, batting .500 (10×20) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 3 walks. INF Zach Shank has reached base safely in his last 15 games, batting .306 (19×62) with 16 runs scored, 1 double, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 3 HBP and 3 walks. OF Jabari Henry has hit safely in 8 of his last 10 games, batting .306 (11×36) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 home runs, 11 RBI and 5 walks. He currently leads all Mariners minor league players with 28 home runs including hitting 4 in his last 6 games and 14 in 45 games since July 1.  

 

Class A Clinton

The LumberKings banged out 10 runs on 13 hits in a 10-5 win. Brett Thomas drove in two runs and five players had two or more hits in the win.

  • From the report: INF Tyler O’Neill has hit safely in each of his last 5 games, batting .450 (9×20) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 8 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen base. He is batting .323 (20×62) with 12 runs scored, 5 doubles, 6 home runs, 18 RBI, 5 walks and 1 stolen base in 16 games in August. INF Joe DeCarlo currently has an 8-game hit streak, batting .406 (13×32) with 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, 4 RBI and 1 walk. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .392 (20×51) with 11 runs scored, 6 doubles, 7 RBI and 4 walks. LH Paul Fry is 3-1 with 1 save and a 0.86 ERA (2 ER, 21.0 IP) over his last 14 relief appearances. 

 

Short A Everett

The Aqua Sox got a two run homer from Kristian Brito and three RBI from Kyle Petty in an 8-6 win over VancouverDan Altavilla improved to 5-0, giving up four runs on four hits in six innings pitched with seven strikeouts and a walk.

  • From the report: 1B Kristian Brito has hit 2 of his 4 home runs this season in his last 3 games, batting .625 (5×8) with 5 runs scored, 2 home runs, 4 RBI and 4 walks in 3 games. RH Daniel Altavilla is 5-0 with a 3.72 ERA (12 ER, 29.0 IP) in his last 5 starts, after going 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA (18 ER, 25.0 IP) in his first 7 career starts (6/17-7/19). LHP Ryan Yarbrough has allowed only 3 hits in 13.0 scoreless innings over his last 4 starts. Overall with Everett he is 0-1 with a 1.61 ERA (5 ER, 28.0 IP), while walking 2 and striking out 37 in 9 games/7 starts. 

 

Rookie League Pulaski

The Mariners were rained out.

RH Rohn Pierce was named Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week, Aug. 11-17. During the week he went 3-0, while tossing 8.1 scoreless innings over 3 relief appearances with Pulaski. Overall he limited opponents to a .172 (5×29) average, while walkin 3 and striking out 10.

  • From the report: OF Arby Fields currently has a 9-game hit streak, batting .394 (13×33) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 6 walks and 4 stolen bases. INF Gianfranco Wawoe has hit safely in 8 of his last 12 games with 5 multi-hit efforts, batting .311 (15×49) with 7 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Trey Cochran-Gill has allowed only 2 earned runs in 25.2 innings in 18 relief appearances, including 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his career. Overall 3-0 with 8 saves, while limiting opponents to a .165 (15×91) average with 3 walks and 33 strikeouts.

 

Rookie League Arizona

The Mariners split a double header with the Padres. They had a big 11-4 win with Hersin Martinez driving in three runs and Erick Mejia and Lachlan Fontaine each driving in two runs. Mejia also had three hits and scored three runs.

  • From the report: RH Osmel Morales is 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA (3 ER, 24.0 IP) over his last 6 games/3 starts. During this stretch he has limited opponents to a .198 (17×86) average, while walking 6 and striking out 37. He did not allow a run over a season-high 16.1 innings, from the 3rd inning on July 17-Aug. 13. OF Hersin Martinez has hit safely in 5 of his last 7 games, batting .400 (10×25) with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 walk. INF Erick Mejia has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .364 (20×55) with 11 runs scored, 5 triples, 1 home run, 9 RBI, 4 walks and 7 stolen bases. After batting .167 (4×24) over his first 9 games with the Mariners, Mejia has hit safely in 17 of his last 21 games, batting .342 (26×76) with 16 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 triples, 1 home run, 11 RBI, 8 walks and 9 stolen bases. RH Ronald Dominguez is 3-1 with 1 save and a 0.50 ERA (2 ER, 36.1 IP) in 15 relief appearances. Overall he has limited opponents to a .165 (20×121) average, while walking 8 and striking out 34.
