Rangers 12, Mariners 4 — Erasmo Ramirez’s spot start results in disaster

Box score:   08.27.14 Box Score

It was an ugly loss today and bad series loss. Manager Lloyd McClendon said his team will flush it and move on. He has no regrets about his decision to bump back Felix Hernandez and the rest of his rotation to get them extra days rest.

I can’t argue with the thinking because of the added rest. Yes you run the risk on this one start in the hopes of not just Felix Hernandez, but Chris Young (who hadn’t pitched a whole season in two years), Hisashi Iwakuma (truncated season), Roenis Elias (never pitched this many innings before) and James Paxton (missed three months with injury) all benefit from the decision to get extra time. (feeling a random thoughts blog post building).

I understand the debate about whether Taijuan Walker is a better option than Erasmo Ramirez. But Ramirez had pitched better in Tacoma of late and in his last few spot starts. I doubt he’ll get any more chances.

Logan Morrison was a little peeved that he didn’t hang onto the ball off  the bat of Tomas Telis in the second inning. Morrison had it for a second and crashed into the wall dropping it. It turned into a three-run triple instead of an inning-ending out.

“It bounced out,” he said. “That kind of sums up the day, I guess. I make that play, no runs score, we’ll see what happens. I don’t make that play, three runs score and it’s a new game. Obviously from there, it got worse.”

*** Manager Lloyd McClendon will miss Friday and Saturday and possibly Sunday’s games against the Nationals. His only daughter Schenell is getting married in Chesterton, IN. I’m told this was scheduled before McClendon had been hired  as manager. If you have a problem with him missing the series, well, then I have no hope for you.
