Jesus Montero involved in an altercation in Boise (updated 4:35 p.m)

Update 4:33 p.m.

From Jack Zduriencik’s meeting with media.

Opening statement:

We are extremely disappointed in both of their actions. It is unacceptable. This organization doesn’t condone that type of behavior. It is being addressed as we speak. There are no excuses for either party. We have none. We don’t intend to make any. It’s something that is extremely disappointing and embarrassing for the organization and for those two individuals.

What we intend to do and what we are in the process of doing in terms of Jesus Montero is we are going to separate the baseball part of Jesus Montero from the human element part of Jesus Montero.  Our intent is to address Jesus’ issues. There’s a history here of things that have happened .We are very, very disappointed in him. I think more than anything else, from a human standpoint, we have to look at Jesus Montero as a person, as a father and as a husband and how can we help Jesus Montero and his family get through this. That’s our intent. That’s our first and foremost intent. We are in the process as we speak. WE are going to continue to do that. We have avenues that we intend to go down. And we will have in-depth conversations with Jesus and his family on how we can help him go on with his life. At the end of the day, we all hope that Jesus Montero becomes a big player and a good big league player. But if that is not the case, then we certainly hope we help Jesus Montero to grow up and be a man and be the kind of father and the kind of husband that he needs.

In terms of Butch, what we will do is we will address than internally. And we will do that very shortly. But we are still in the process of gathering all the facts. We’ve got a lot of information. We’ve had a lot of conversations with a lot of people. We’ll continue that process. We’ll make sure that we dot every i and cross every t. It’s something that we intend to fix. And we intend to address both parties accordingly.

Will you meet with him when he comes back to Seattle?

I will meet with him.

He won’t rejoin the team?

“Yeah, understand this, just to make this perfectly clear. The one thing with Jesus is because of our potential call ups in September, Jesus was put on a  rehab assignment and assigned to Everett. The purpose of that was assigned to Everett. The purpose of that was so he could get playing time. He wasn’t in a ballgame last night because if you look at the Triple-A club and you realize you have Corey Hart down there, Justin Smoak down there. We were intending to get Michael Saunders down there when this decisions was made. There just weren’t going to be enough at-bats and Jesus was coming off an injury so we were trying to get him at the lowest level where he can get some playing time and if that club made the playoffs he would be able to continue to play with them. It’s clear that Tacoma’s not going to be in the playoffs, so that was our game, that’s why he was assigned to that ball club, and the fact that he was down there with Dave Valle, we thought that would be good for him. Dave’s been around a while. He knows the organization well. We thought it would be — he’s bilingual — we thought he would be a good mentor for him for the next week or so.

He is not going to participate in anymore baseball the rest of the year with us. That’s just the way it is. It’s not going to happen. He’s back here. On his way back. Like I said, we’ve already begun a process of setting up a program where we can sit with him and talk with him and we’re going to go further than that. I’m not prepared to release all the details of that at this point in time, but again we’ll go back to what I said earlier. Our purpose is to help him first and foremost get his life together and be able to assist him and his family.”

Has this been a pattern with him?

“I don’t know if I can answer that right now. There have been things with Jesus that have been setbacks. I know he’s had more than one, so to say they’re related, we’re going to find that out. It was just an individual incident. I think we’re going to deal with this incident individually and see where it takes us in terms of what else has happened to Jesus in his past.”

Can you clarify any of the facts about what instigated the confrontation?

“Again, until I sit with Jesus, we had our discussions with Jesus. I haven’t talked to him yet. I’ll wait until he comes back and I’ll have my conversation with him face-to-face. There’s always two sides to a story. But it really doesn’t matter. This incident is of the magnitude that either party should have been more under control. Either party should have been more professional. You just don’t get to this point and say neither is to blame or who is to cast the blame. It doesn’t really matter. There is always two sides to every story. In the end, I would view this as saying both parties are wrong.”

Is there a way that Butch remains with you?

“We’ll see. I’m not prepared to comment on it right now because I think what we’re going to do is we have a investigation going on. We have a lot of information. We’ve had a lot of conversations. I have talked to Butch myself personally. But again I do think that some of these things have to be handled internally before any decision is made. There is just the proper process that you need to go through and address with each individual and right now we’re not there yet.”

Do cross checkers talk with players, typically?

“During a ballgame, I would hope not. I do think that there’s nothing wrong with — a lot of our scouts have relationships  with players. They’ve signed them, they’ve scouted them, they’ve been responsible for some of them coming to us in trades. So there’s nothing wrong with going down and having a conversation with anybody. We’re all part of the organization, we’re all part of this together, this incident is I think an isolated incident that went over the top.

Could there be a union grievance:

I couldn’t’ speculate on possibilities. I don’t have the answer on that. I don’t’ really know where that mindset is at, at this moment. I’ll know more when I have a sit down with him. I’m sure we’ll talk. We’re going to have a lot of conversations from this day forward I think for a while about this incident. We’re at a point right now where we are fact-finding and gathering and some of the programs and the process we have in place. Who knows where this will lead us in terms of who else gets involved. That is yet to be determined

Through fact-finding did you find previous acrimony between them:

No. I don’t have all the information because I haven’t sat down fact-to-face with both parties. I’ve had conversations, but it’s different when you are in the room and face to face and we will do that. I would be surprised if there was. It certainly wouldn’t be anything anyone would know about.

Scouts under 1 year deals:

Some scouts are on multiyear deals. I’d have to look at Butch’s contract. I haven’t thought of that.

Our contracts for the most part run Nov. 1 thru  Oct. 31. But I’m not indicating anything here for that action at all. We’re just in a process again of trying to uncover everything that happened. We know a lot right now but until we get behind closed doors face-to-face and I would say have other professional people involved with us we’re not prepared to go much further than to say we’re disappointed, this is a very, very unfortunate incident and we are addressing every possible angle top to bottom.

Update: Investigative reporter Geoff Baker did some investigating and found out it involved Mariners’ national crosschecker Butch Baccala. Here’s his story

Jesus Montero was involved in an altercation in Boise tonight. Beyond that, there is a lot of stuff floating around out there, nothing confirmed to be true.

Just about the time Keith Law tweeted this …

I started getting texts from a few sources saying that Montero got into a confrontation in the stands with a scout.

Here’s the facts … Montero is in Boise with the Everett Aqua Sox on a rehab assignment from a strained oblique. He was not in the starting lineup tonight and was not ejected per the official box score.

This is from the Boise Hawks Radio announcer

Beyond that, there is nothing confirmed, just a lot of crazy rumors.

Jack Zduriencik said this via text: “I am aware of the incident in Boise. We are currently in the process of gathering information, but until I have all the details, I cannot comment.”
