Taijuan Walker, Patrick Kivlehan start off Arizona Fall League with strong performances

Box score

The Arizona Fall League opened on Tuesday in, well, Arizona. The Mariners have seven players participating for the Surprise Saguaros, including Taijuan Walker, who got the opening day start.

Walker tossed four innings, giving up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He threw 57 pitches with 44 strikes and faced 17 batters. He recorded six ground ball outs. Both Keith Law and Bernie Pleskoff were tweeting from the game and had Walker touching 97 mph.

So that’s a good outing for him.

Patrick Kivlehan got the start at first base and hit a solo homer on a 93 mph fastball from Royals’ prospect Kyle Zimmer in the game. Kivlehan went 1-for-4.

Teammate and top prospect DJ Peterson had a RBI opposite field double to right field on a 0-2 93 mph fastball from Matt Lollis. He went 1-for-3 with a walk. John Hicks started at catcher and went 1-for-3 with a walk.

The only bad part for the Mariners was that right-hander Stephen Landazuri struggled, giving up three runs on four hits and blowing a 4-2 lead.
