The Mariners’ top free agent target appears to be off the market. According to tweets from Ken Rosenthal of Fox, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN and Enrique Rojas for ESPN Deportes, free agent designated hitter Victor Martinez is on the verge of signing a four-year deal to remain with the Tigers.

Rojas is reporting that Martinez will get a four-year, $70 million deal from the Tigers, while CBS’ Jon Heyman says it’s four years for a total of $68 million.

The Mariners loved the idea of adding Martinez at designated hitter and having him bat between Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager. They were always going to have to overpay to keep him because of Martinez’s attachment to the Tigers and his familiarity with the organization. I guessed they would have had to be at four years and close to $80-85 million.

Now Seattle will have to look at different hitting options to supplement its lineup. The free agent market is minimal with Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval, Billy Butler and Melky Cabrera as possible alternatives. It sure looks like they may have to get offensive help via trade.
