Minor trade: Seattle acquires right-hander Sam Gaviglio

The Mariners made a minor trade of players not on the 40-man roster. They sent Class AAA utility player Ty Kelly to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio.

The move was made to build starting pitching depth in the minor league system, particularly at Class AAA Tacoma.

Gaviglio, 24, went 5-12 with a 4.28 ERA in 25 games, including 24 starts, in a career-high 136.2 innings with Double-A Springfield in the Cardinals organization this season. He posted a 2.90 ERA (20 ER, 62.0 IP) in 11 games, including 10 starts, during the second half of the season after posting a 5.42 ERA (45 ER, 74.2 IP) in 14 starts during the first half.

The right-hander was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2011 June Amateur Draft out of Oregon State University. He pitched for Salt River during the 2013 Arizona Fall League, making six starts after missing 3 ½ months of the 2013 season due to a right forearm strain.

Kelly, 26, hit .263 (120×456) with 81 runs scored, 19 doubles, 2 triples, 15 home runs and 80 RBI in 134 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season. In six minor league seasons with Baltimore and Seattle, he is a career .282 (728×2577) hitter with 123 doubles, 14 triples, 39 home runs and 336 RBI in 703 games. He was acquired by Seattle in June of 2013 in exchange for outfielder Eric Thames.
