Mariners non-tender Carlos Rivero

The deadline to “tender” players on the 40-man roster came and went Tuesday night without much ado for the Mariners.

They “tendered” contracts to 31 players, including six arbitration eligible players – Michael Saunders, Austin Jackson, Dustin Ackley, Logan Morrison, Tom Wilhelmsen and Charlie Furbush. The other 25 are under club control.

The only player that wasn’t tendered a contract was recently acquired utility infielder Carlos Rivero. He was a casualty of roster space. With the 40-man at 39 players and the team on the verge of signing Nelson Cruz and also need of an open roster spot for flexibility, Rivero was a casualty. He now becomes a free agent.
