No Melky for the Mariners

So this happened last night when I was away from my computer having a late dinner with friends.

But Melky Cabrera is headed to the White Sox and not the Mariners

Cabrera was looking for a four-year deal. No team on the market, including the Mariners would give him four years. All teams held fast at three. He accepted the White Sox offer.

At this point, you have to wonder if the Mariners were offering less than $14 million per year. Or if Cabrera was really interested in coming to Seattle. If Seattle went that fourth year, there may have been a good chance he’s putting a Mariners’ jersey in a presser next week. But every team has limits and it appears that exceeded theirs.

This tweet from Enrique Rojas says that Cabrera never received a four-year offer from any team and chose to stay in the Eastern part of the US. It was mentioned early in the offseason that Cabrera preferred to stay away from West Coast teams.

General manager Jack Zduriencik said on the Hot Stove show the other day that the team could get creative. Well, I guess we will see his creativity in action.

There are few lesser options. Alex Rios, Colby Rasmus and others. I doubt you will see them panic and dump Taijuan Walker for Justin Upton or Ian Desmond.
