Mariners confirm Robinson Cano playing in limited number of Winter League games

A few days ago, there were reports that Robinson Cano was granted permission to play in some winter league baseball games in the Dominican Republic. The Mariners confirmed that report today.

Here’s the statement from general manager Jack Zdurienick:

“Robinson approached us about playing games in the Dominican Winter League and we have granted him permission to play in a limited amount of games. Robinson has reported to us his broken right pinkie toe is fully healed and wants to get on a baseball field to test it before reporting for spring training. We look forward to Robinson reporting to Peoria in a little over a month ready to go for the 2015 season.”

According to reports out of the DR, Cano will play his first game on Jan. 13 for Estrella De Orientes and  is scheduled to play five games with the team, but may also play in the postseason if the team advances.

It’s not a completely unusual request. Cano is admittedly a fanatic about playing the game as much as possible. This is a chance for him to get some early swings in as part of his offseason program.
