Mariners sign veteran catcher John Baker to a minor league contract

Mentioned a few days ago that the Mariners would likely sign a veteran back-up catcher to a minor league deal. Though not officially announced by the organization yet, pending the results of a physical, they have agreed to terms with John Baker on a minor league contract with an invitation to big league spring training.

Jon Heyman of CBS reported early, but Baker confirmed the news on his Twitter on his twitter account.

Baker will be brought in to compete with Jesus Sucre for the back-up catching spot and provide organizational depth. Sucre is an outstanding defensive catcher, but not much of an offensive threat.

Baker appeared in 68 games last year for the Cubs. Here’s his career stats.
