Podcast: Mariners season hits crucial point

Needless to say, the Mariners could use a victory later this afternon in this finale of a road trip that began so well and then went south on the team in a hurry. The Mariners are 2-6 on the trip after losing five straight, the most recent of those defeats a 12-0 thrashing last night.

This is where a coaching staff becomes so important. The Mariners simply cannot allow this recent string of setbacks to ruin everything they’ve built up over the past month. But for a few breaks, they’d have won most of the games in Cleveland and then last night’s Aaron Harang debacle would not seem to be as catastrophic as it does.

The coaching staff has to communicate what Raul Ibanez tried to last night. That this team appeared to be on the verge of a breakthrough in Cleveland, but just ran into a red hot squad.

Mariners podcast: team dealing with huge adversity fewer than two weeks in

[do action=”brightcove-video” videoid=”2294964794001″/]

Clearly, things are not going according to plan for the Mariners, losers of five of their last six games and who just lost two of their best hitters — Michael Saunders and Michael Morse — to injury less than 24 hours apart. Saunders will miss at least the next few weeks on the DL while Morse could be out a week after suffering a non-displaced fracture of his finger after being hit on the left hand by a pitch late in last night’s game.

Just when you thought the Aaron Harang deal would be the biggest event of the day, right?

Mariners podcast: team set to play in chilly Chicago

[do action=”brightcove-video” videoid=”2280288390001″/]

Well, I promised another podcast to answer some of your Twitter questions and here it is as the Mariners get set to play in cool and windy Chicago, where the scoreboard thermometer says it’s 37 degrees while the wind chill supposedly has it feeling like 29.

No, that’s not good baseball weather.

Players donned wool caps and gloves as they began their pregame warmups. Even Canadian-born Michael Saunders was complaining about the temperature.

“I’m a soft Canadian,” Saunders joked. “I’m a West Coaster.”

Two Miami boys, Raul Ibanez (left) and Robert Andino (right) and other Mariners gearing up for cooler weather tonight.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge┬ásaid the team will have heaters in the dugout and he’ll make sure the players “layer up” and stay loose, but that they have to get accustomed to this type of weather early in any season.

“It’s quite the drastic change from where we just came from,” Wedge said.
