Trending: Leather, leather everywhere. It’s hot in swaths and details

Welcome to fall’s love affair with leather, real and imitation. It’s showing up everywhere.

You’ll see flashes of leather in the form of piping, trim and all sorts of embellishments.

And look for leather pants, dresses, skirts and shirts.

The thing to remember about leather is a little goes a long way. In other words, don’t wear it head to toe unless you want to look like Catwoman. It’s difficult to come across as fashionable or sexy or bold if you look like you’re wearing a costume.

Whether you choose real or fake leather is totally up to you and your budget, though it’s interesting that what used to be called pleather is now billed as “faux leather” or, my favorite, “vegan leather.”

In any case, here’s a look at some leather worth loving.

A leather motorcycle jacket pairs two of fall’s biggest trends. The Bar III Faux-Leather Quilted Motorcycle Jacket (on sale for $70 at Macy’s) goes well with jeans and even better with girly dresses (the contrast is unexpected and interesting).

The Sarsen Shadow Hood ($195 at shopsarsen.com), by Seattle designer Heather Blanchard, mixes casual and luxe. It combines lambskin leather sleeves and back yoke with a knit hooded sweater, giving your favorite hoodie a lot more style.

For the woman who thinks a little (p)leather goes a long way, the Banana Republic City Tee with faux leather trim ($39.50) has a light touch. Want to make a bigger splash? Try the Pleated Leather Top ($198).

What makes a conservative knit sheath stand out? Faux-leather crisscross accents, such as those on the Donna Ricco Faux Leather Trim Textured Knit Sheath ($138 at Nordstrom). The accents are super flattering as well as trendy.

Nothing screams rock ’n’ roll style like leather pants. Vince makes a gorgeous Cropped Leather Legging ($1,175 at Vince, Bellevue) made of lamb leather. Those of us less likely to hit four digits while shopping can try H&M’s Imitation Leather Pants ($35), which have stretch jersey on the sides to help them keep their shape.

The young and young-at-heart will look cute in the (Minus The) Leather Fit And Flare Skirt ($60 at Express). Pair it with tights and some booties this fall for a look that’s fun and sexy.

Want to make an investment? The French Connection Seamed Leather Sheath Dress ($468 at Nordstrom) has elbow-length sleeves and stretch panels down the side for a flattering fit. The classic shape of this dress should give it staying power for years.
